About the class: In this creative, meditative class, use colorful inks to paint on the surface of water as you create unique, marbled paper designs.

Suminagashi-style paper marbling is the centuries-old process of painting on water. Ink floated on the the water's surface and swirled around using breath and brushes. Paper is set on top of the water's surface, resulting in swirling patterns and organic designs.

In this class, we'll explore the history and context of the process, ways to create a variety of designs, contemporary applications of marbled papers, and we'll explore how this process connects to meditation and nature. You’ll walk away with a collection of hand marbled, one of a kind papers.

The paper marbling process is perfect for all makers and learners, especially those just beginning to explore creative practices.

About the space: Pyramid Atlantic is a nonprofit contemporary art center fostering the creative disciplines of papermaking, printmaking, and book arts within a collaborative community. We equip, educate, and exhibit in our historic Hyattsville home.
